 In our fast-paced world, few people seem to have the patience and expertise required to deal appropriately and sensitively with seniors’ issues. Frankly, many people are ignorant of the challenges that seniors, particularly elderly seniors, face on a day-to-day basis. What many forget, or fail to realize, is that seniors may be on medication, suffer from chronic pain, injuries, or illness, and/or have disabilities. This lack of understanding, along with societal prejudices, leaves seniors vulnerable to indifference, intimidation and even aggression. And largely because of these factors, seniors do not receive the necessary care that they require and deserve. In a 2005 United Way Report on Ottawa-Area Seniors, 48% of all seniors rated Ottawa’s public transportation system as bad. In addition, seniors in rural areas were almost three times more likely to experience transportation problems than those in the city. More worrying still, the study found that some seniors were afraid to go out after dark, 61% in their own neighborhood.

A recent Ottawa Seniors’ Transportation Forum identified more than 30 flaws in the public transportation system. But identifying flaws is always easier than fixing them. For instance, in May 2007, CBC reported that OC Transpo was still trying to address seniors' concerns about buses that lurch forward suddenly from a stop. As accessible transit specialist Kathy Riley observed, "Some of the seniors are fearful of taking the bus… because they don't want to fall." 

Rightly so, for a 2005 report noted an increase in fall-related hospitalization cases among seniors, as well as fatalities due to falls. To be specific, roughly 50,000 seniors in Canada are hospitalized each year due to a fall-related accident.
